Determined to exceed the standards of quality patient care, Spectrum Health began the planning of a new 440,000 square foot, 212 bed hospital. Spectrum's Helen DeVos Children's Hospital makes a statement on Michigan Street's "Medical Mile" in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The hospital's 14 story facade is entirely made of windows to provide their healing patients a scenic view of the Grand River. The design of Helen DeVos Children's Hospital includes a large parking ramp to accommodate hundreds of daily visitors, an all-faiths chapel, a lush rooftop garden, quiet spaces, and an innovative play and entertainment center.

 

StructureTec has developed a great working relationship with Spectrum Health by delivering results on building envelope remediation projects across their extensive hospital portfolio. From the beginning phases of development, Spectrum Health engaged StructureTec's commissioning services to protect their investment, mitigate risk, and minimize disturbance to their patients.

 

Due to the complexity of the designs and sensitivity to patient comfort and safety, StructureTec deployed a dediated team to support, monitor, and collaborate with the project teams. A comprehensive review of the specification details, which included curtain wall elements, pedestrian bridges, below grade waterproofing, and an intensive green roof system was completed. After perfecting the details, the project team was ready to begin construction. StructureTec monitored the activity and workmanship of crews from 17 providers throughout the entire duration of construction. Effective communication and timely issue correction efforts directed by StructureTec resulted in successful project completion for Spectrum Health and it's patients.

 

StructureTec provided a 12 month and 24 month post-construction warranty audit to ensure building performance. Issues found were remediated under the provisions of the responsible contractor and/ or manufacturer's warranty.

 

The system life-cycle extension, reduction in maintenance expense, and increase in efficiency allows Spectrum to focus their funds and efforts on patient care, development of life-saving treatments, and expanding their world renowned team of medical professionals. For the seventh year in a row, The Helen DeVos Children's Hospital has ranked in the top 50 of U.S. News and  World Report's 2018 Best Children's Hospitals.
