Marathon Oil Corporation is a worldwide oil and natural gas exploration and production company. In Findlay, Ohio the corporation’s hometown, Marathon’s buildings had been built in multiple phases, with dates ranging from 1905 to around the 1960’s. Maintenance was done over time, but an overall assessment and plan needed to be done for the restoration of the building exterior facades and windows.
As part of the evaluation StructureTec provided recommendations for either steel window restoration or replacement. Marathon decided that replacing the windows was a better option in order to ensure energy savings. During the design development stage several sample windows were installed to determine if the existing historic windows would need to be replicated. The owner thus decided to proceed with a historic looking window with modern day technology for energy savings.
The project started off with many logistical challenges; including receiving the sample windows required to select the window type. Then, during the project, Findlay experienced the second-worst flood in the city’s history, when the Blanchard River crested at 18.46 feet. Due to the flooding, the start of work was postponed; however, the owner mandated that the windows needed to be received by end of year. This date was eventually lifted since the flooding became such a huge issue interfering with the work The delay became very difficult to deal with because of the long lead time of window manufacturing. Also, due to the nature of the business, all work had to be completed at night after working hours.
As a way to solve these challenges StructureTec worked with the client to determine an appropriate schedule and sequencing of the work.
